January 31, 2006SOTU
January 31, 2006BWAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.
i think my brain split in two after reading the speech. ack! but, thank god for mailing lists, ’cause everyone else has already done the heavy lifting and all i have to do is link.
many, many links and a lot of info can be found at mydd, the center for american progress blog, the dnc, and the dccc.
the democratic response is pasted in full after the jump.
TCDP Counter State of the Union
January 31, 2006i am blissfully ignorant of what bush really said in his SOTU address tonight. instead of sitting in front of the television watching the preznit read at me, i decided to go to the tarrant county democratic party counter state of the union fundraiser. ’twas much fun.
i went because it was an opportunity to hear both candidates for governor speak in person. i’ve been following the campaign fairly closely online and have found myself unable to truly committ to one candidate or the other. i attended the function tonight hoping to walk away with a sense of who i was “the one”.
trouble is, they both are fantastic guys. i spoke briefly with both chris bell and bob gammage. i found them both engaging, although they are as different as two candidate could possibly be. bell is calm, cool, and collected. he’s also smart and possesses a good sense of humor. he has a ton of experience in various texas governmental bodies, and has a good grasp of the challenges we face in our state. gammage is an old school texas politico who has a deep understanding of texas political history. he’s a gentleman and also has a firm grasp of the issues.
i walked away with the confidence of knowing that either man would make a fine governor. i don’t want to sound like a waffle, but i’m truly undecided. i spoke briefly with both of them, and they’re impressive in person as well. oh yea, and chris bell is a fucking giant. sometimes the strangest things stay with you after you meet a person.
anyway, as i said, i was hoping to walk away having decided which candidate to bestow the coveted Official Annatopia.com Endorsment (TM) LOL… but having not yet made up my mind, i wanted to thoroughly explain the reasons behind me holding off for now. i’ve got to make up my mind soon, and plan to do so and post within the next two weeks.
another thing that’s fun about attending these local functions is that you get a lot of juicy gossip. one thing that i feel compelled to pass along is some news about the van os campaign. seems like some of the bigwigs in the unions haven’t been offering financial support to van os, preferring instead to hedge their bets and dump their resources into carole toomanynames’s coffers in the hope of unseating governor goodhair. i think this is a load of crap. david van os was a union lawyer fer christ’s sakes! he’s always fought for the little guy, the powerless, and if it’s true that these organisations aren’t willing to put boots on the ground for him, well houston we will have a problem, you know what i’m saying? we need to get david set up on actblue, pdiddie. aren’t they going into texas races this year?
anyway… barbara ann was also there. she’s great. i’ve seen her before and wholehertedly offer her our support here at annatopia. she’s definitely got her stump speech down, and her spanish is flawless. she’s the kind of lady who makes you want to believe. i think the empty skirt just might get suprised this fall.
and how embarrassing is this? i met people who read this bog. you know, there’s a good reason i prefer to operate in semi-anonymity. it’s because flattery is embarrassing! (but thanks anyway to everybody who stopped by and said hello – it was really nice meeting you. please don’t hate me. LOL)
sometime tomorrow i’ll get around to posting the pictures and video from the event. now i think i’m off to rot my brain and read the SOTU…
get ready to vomit – here’s your SOTU preview (for real)
January 31, 2006this just came to me via email. it’s from the white house (no, seriously):
THE WHITE HOUSE
Office of the Press Secretary
________________________________________________________________
For Immediate Release January 31, 2006STATE OF THE UNION EXCERPTS
As Prepared for DeliveryAmerica is always at its best when we are shaping events, instead of being
shaped by events. Tonight, the President will chart a clear path forward
for our Nation:“In this decisive year, you and I will make choices that determine both
the future and the character of our country. We will choose to act
confidently in pursuing the enemies of freedom – or retreat from our
duties in the hope of an easier life. We will choose to build our
prosperity by leading the world economy – or shut ourselves off from trade
and opportunity. In a complex and challenging time, the road of
isolationism and protectionism may seem broad and inviting – yet it ends
in danger and decline. The only way to protect our people … the only way
to secure the peace … the only way to control our destiny is by our
leadership – so the United States of America will continue to lead.”The President will talk about America’s leadership role in the world, and
the importance of working together to better protect our country, support
our troops, and advance freedom:“Abroad, our Nation is committed to an historic, long-term goal – we seek
the end of tyranny in our world… the future security of America depends on
it.”“In a time of testing, we cannot find security by abandoning our
commitments and retreating within our borders. If we were to leave these
vicious attackers alone, they would not leave us alone. They would simply
move the battlefield to our own shores.”“…Ultimately, the only way to defeat the terrorists is to defeat their
dark vision of hatred and fear by offering the hopeful alternative of
political freedom and peaceful change.”“To overcome dangers in our world, we must also take the offensive by
encouraging economic progress, fighting disease, and spreading hope in
hopeless lands.”To keep America competitive in a dynamic economy, the President will set
out an agenda focused on the priorities that families are most concerned
about. He will talk about the importance of having an educated, skilled
workforce, reducing our dependence on foreign oil, and making health care
more affordable, accessible, and portable:“Here at home, America also has a great opportunity: We will build the
prosperity of our country by strengthening our economic leadership in the
world.”On Competitiveness:
“The American economy is pre-eminent – but we cannot afford to be
complacent. In a dynamic world economy, we are seeing new competitors
like China and India.”“We must continue to lead the world in human talent and creativity. Our
greatest advantage in the world has always been our educated,
hard-working, ambitious people – and we are going to keep that edge.”On Energy:
“America is addicted to oil, which is often imported from unstable parts
of the world… The best way to break this addiction is through
technology.”On Health Care:
“Our government has a responsibility to help provide health care for the
poor and the elderly, and we are meeting that responsibility. For all
Americans, we must confront the rising cost of care … strengthen the
doctor-patient relationship … and help people afford the insurance
coverage they need.”Finally, the President will speak to the character and compassion of America:
“…our greatness is not measured in power or luxuries, but by who we are
and how we treat one another. So we strive to be a compassionate, decent,
hopeful society.”
ug… where’s a link to the drinking game? i think that’s the only way i’m going to get through this mess.
it’s over, but we live to fight another day
January 30, 2006first, the vichy dems who voted for cloture:
Akaka (HI)(202) 224-6361
Baucus (MT)(202) 224-2651
Bingaman (NM)(202) 224-5521
Byrd (WV)(202) 224-3954
Cantwell (WA)(202) 224-3441
Carper (DE)(202) 224-2441
Dorgan (ND)(202) 224-2551
Inouye (HI) (202) 224-3934
Johnson (SD)(202) 224-5842
Kohl (WI)(202) 224-5653
Landrieu (LA)(202) 224-5824

Pryor (AR)(202) 224-2353
Rockefeller (WV)(202) 224-6472
Salazar (CO)(202) 224-5852
do what you want with that contact info. as far as i’m concerned, those dems are dead to me. no money. no support. no nothing! especially the blue state dems, who have no excuse for voting for cloture. as to the red state dems, i will save my ire for tomorrow when i’ve had more time to process this.
the vote will be held tomorrow. we’ll get about 40 votes against borkalito, which is a good improvement over the roberts vote. i sincerely believe that we changed some minds on that vote (and the cloture vote as well). not bad considering that NARAL and PFAW and all the other democratic organisations essentially didn’t do shit (with a few exceptions, such as moveon).
in moments like these, it’s natural to think of abandoning the party. in fact, that would be the easy thing to do. but, if working for the dean campaign taught me anything, it’s that the path of least resistance isn’t neccessarily the right path. meteor blades, who’s been slopping in the mud since before i was born, said it best. you can go read his post if you need a pick-me-up. in fact, i’d highly recommend it.
one last note: download this mp3. time for more flowers for boxer? and BTW, sean-paul for president!
A Different George Got It
January 30, 2006First, from President George Washington’s farewell address:
I have already intimated to you the danger of parties in the State, with particular reference to the founding of them on geographical discriminations. Let me now take a more comprehensive view, and warn you in the most solemn manner against the baneful effects of the spirit of party generally.
This spirit, unfortunately, is inseparable from our nature, having its root in the strongest passions of the human mind. It exists under different shapes in all governments, more or less stifled, controlled, or repressed; but, in those of the popular form, it is seen in its greatest rankness, and is truly their worst enemy.
The alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge, natural to party dissension, which in different ages and countries has perpetrated the most horrid enormities, is itself a frightful despotism. But this leads at length to a more formal and permanent despotism. The disorders and miseries which result gradually incline the minds of men to seek security and repose in the absolute power of an individual; and sooner or later the chief of some prevailing faction, more able or more fortunate than his competitors, turns this disposition to the purposes of his own elevation, on the ruins of public liberty.
Without looking forward to an extremity of this kind (which nevertheless ought not to be entirely out of sight), the common and continual mischiefs of the spirit of party are sufficient to make it the interest and duty of a wise people to discourage and restrain it.
It serves always to distract the public councils and enfeeble the public administration. It agitates the community with ill-founded jealousies and false alarms, kindles the animosity of one part against another, foments occasionally riot and insurrection. It opens the door to foreign influence and corruption, which finds a facilitated access to the government itself through the channels of party passions. Thus the policy and the will of one country are subjected to the policy and will of another.
There is an opinion that parties in free countries are useful checks upon the administration of the government and serve to keep alive the spirit of liberty. This within certain limits is probably true; and in governments of a monarchical cast, patriotism may look with indulgence, if not with favor, upon the spirit of party. But in those of the popular character, in governments purely elective, it is a spirit not to be encouraged. From their natural tendency, it is certain there will always be enough of that spirit for every salutary purpose. And there being constant danger of excess, the effort ought to be by force of public opinion, to mitigate and assuage it. A fire not to be quenched, it demands a uniform vigilance to prevent its bursting into a flame, lest, instead of warming, it should consume.
It is important, likewise, that the habits of thinking in a free country should inspire caution in those entrusted with its administration, to confine themselves within their respective constitutional spheres, avoiding in the exercise of the powers of one department to encroach upon another. The spirit of encroachment tends to consolidate the powers of all the departments in one, and thus to create, whatever the form of government, a real despotism. A just estimate of that love of power, and proneness to abuse it, which predominates in the human heart, is sufficient to satisfy us of the truth of this position. The necessity of reciprocal checks in the exercise of political power, by dividing and distributing it into different depositaries, and constituting each the guardian of the public weal against invasions by the others, has been evinced by experiments ancient and modern; some of them in our country and under our own eyes. To preserve them must be as necessary as to institute them. If, in the opinion of the people, the distribution or modification of the constitutional powers be in any particular wrong, let it be corrected by an amendment in the way which the Constitution designates. But let there be no change by usurpation; for though this, in one instance, may be the instrument of good, it is the customary weapon by which free governments are destroyed. The precedent must always greatly overbalance in permanent evil any partial or transient benefit, which the use can at any time yield.
If you read the whole speech, you will find more foreshadowing of the ills that have afflicted our nation thoughout its history. But for this moment, let us focus on this part.
President George Washington, who kept this country from slipping into monarchy at its inception, saw the dangers we face today. The whole concept of the unitary executive flies in the face of what the United States was founded against. And this man, this leader of men, knew the dangers this country would face and left us this warning across time.
Its not just about Alito. Its the whole concept that the Republicans have based their assault on. They are for party above country, their desires above the Constitution. They are an insurgency in our Republic, a threat to our way of life, to all life. This Administration is only concerned with the accumulation of power for the sake of power.
When will this country wake up and purge this sickness from our land? What horrors must happen, what level of injustice must we witness, before these criminals are locked away for good?
The war being waged against our Republic is not being done with guns, it is being waged by men in suits, claiming to be Patriots, slowly tearing at the seams. When will America wake up and realize the danger we are in? Will it be in time to stop another world war, one where this country is the aggressor?
Let us never forget that this nation’s founders faced the most powerful monarchy of its time, and defeated it with a ragtag bunch held together by a common dream. That dream was freedom from the very tyranny we are facing today. What worth do we have as citizens if we do not have the courage to stand up and defend our Republic?
This is beyond Democrats versus Republicans. This is the citizenry against a government that has turned against the very fabric of sanity.
info needed – re: filibuster
January 30, 2006does anyone out there know of an online tool that will fax all the senators’ state offices? if so, please drop it in the comments so i can link it up here. remember, html isn’t allowed, so just copy and paste the link into the comments.
if you haven’t contacted your senator yet, remember, you can always use this tool to fax them en masse in washington.
another quick update: with all due respect to my dear friends matt and john – quit pissing in our cheerios. we are so close to getting the votes we need, and regardless of whether you think kerry’s (or anyone else’s) move was craven politics, can you just hold your freakin’ fire for a bit and let us keep working? i am unwilling to give up hope at this point, not after a 3 day campaign that has us up at 37 filibuster votes.
it seems that 4 more votes are needed (not three, as i was told on saturday), OR we need to prevent frist from getting the 60 votes for cloture. i wonder if the repubs – snowe, collins, stevens – could be convinced to abstain from voting for cloture, and i wonder if landreui, nelson, and pryor could be convinced to abstain from voting for cloture. i’m not 100% sure, but i think that if frist doesn’t get his 60, we can drag this out until after the SOTU and piss in bush’s cheerios.
at this point, it look like the following folks still need to be convinced:

and again, if anyone knows of an online tool that will fax all these folks at their state offices, please drop it in the comments.
p.s, for croaky, here’s the gore link you asked for. basically, gore was pointing out the constitutional crisis we face. i wrote an entry here which might help you distill everything down into a few points you can send to these wafflers. also, democrats.com has some good news this morning:
# 11:45 am: Bill Nelson (D-FL) still opposes the filibuster – we must turn him around!
# 11:42 am: Tom Harkin will abstain, which is great! (#18)
# 11:20 am: John Kerry will speak on the floor at 12:30 – turn on C-SPAN 2!
# 10:55 am: AP’s Jesse Holland is singing an entirely different tune: Kennedy leads final effort to block Alito. That means it’s too close to call!!!! Kennedy offers the perfect filibuster sound-bite: “He is the wrong judge at the wrong time in the wrong place.” Jeffords opposes Alito – but will he filibuster? Keep calling the undecideds!!!
and one final note: seems the gang of 14 have stabbed us in the back. post is here.
breaking on pryor: callers at DU are reporting that mark pryor may ABSTAIN from the cloture vote. that’s one less vote for frist, folks, and might mean that the gang of 14 is cracking under pressure. we *must* keep it up. don’t listen to the naysayers who are telling you that this fight is lost or over and done with. keep calling and faxing, and while you’re at it, hit this poll. there’s also news that harkin (D-IA) will abstain from the cloture vote. keep it up, folks! remember how dire this situation looked last week? if nothing else, we can drop a huge turd on bush’s SOTU.

Sunday Morning Filibuster update
January 29, 2006we got obama! we also have a committment from biden to vote at least once for the filibuster. we have to keep up the pressure and convince biden to support the filibuster for as long as it lasts. please use the contact info in this entry to contact these folks. from what we hear, most of the senators’ washington inboxes are full, so it’s time to flood their local offices (listed in the entry). there’s a running update in this dkos diary. also posted in that diary is really handy online tool that you can use to fax all the senators. it’s here and it works like a charm. this is a copy of the fax i sent a few moments ago:
Dear Senator,
I would like to add my voice to the growing chorus of Americans demanding that Samuel Alito’s nomination be filibustered. The reason I am concerned is because he has a long-documented history of supporting the theory of the unitary executive. If this theory is affirmed by our Judiciary, it will practically nullify our Constitutional system of checks and balances and completely throw off the balance of power between the three branches of government. The theory gives the Executive branch more leeway in decision making than is granted in our Constitution, essentially granting him/her the powers of a monarch. I find it extremely disturbing that a nominee to the highest court in our land subscribes to such a belief.
Back in American history, we were taught that the founders of this country fought a war for independence against a King. We were also taught that the system of checks and balances was sacred, and was the main protection against the rise of an American monarchy. The unitary executive theory threatens the very foundations of our democracy, and I am begging you to do the right thing. FILIBUSTER ALITO and protect our republic.
just do it!
filibuster news
January 29, 2006you might have caught this already over at dkos, but i’m going to repost anyway. sen. kenndy had a conference call this afternoon w/the bloggers, and he has a request. i had to miss the call ’cause one of my dear nephews had a birthday today (he’s 4, and we just had to see him open his bag of spiderman stuff). i figure that’s a legit excuse, although i surely missed the opportunity to tell teddy thanks for fighting the good fight. here is his recommendation:
He is encouraging you to contact your Democratic Senators, regardless of what they might have said so far, but specifically mentioned Senators Pryor, Lincoln, Cantwell, Murray, Baucus, Harkin, Levin, Bayh, Lautenberg, Menendez, and Lieberman. In addition, he said to keep the pressure on Republican Senators Snowe, Collins, Chaffee, and Stevens.
read the whole summary of the call here. once again, here is the toll free congressional switchboard: 888-355-3588 or 888-818-6641. if you can’t get through there (rumor has it many of the senators have turned off their voice mails or their boxes are full), try their state offices (list is here). also, the cloture count page is here.
and thanks to the clueless caucus watch at democrats.com, here is their contact info. these people need to hear from us!
