go read

October 31, 2005

sorry for the short outage this morning. we had some thunderstorms in D/FW this morning that apparently knocked out power briefly at our web host’s location. *sigh*

oh well, back to bizness. so, what’s on our plate this morning? there’s the nomination of sam alito, scalia clone, to the supreme court. the official white house talking points are floating around already. i received them via email this morning, but you can check them out in their entirety at is that legal?. personally, i’m extremely concerned about this nomination. first, it shows that bush has caved to the radical right wing by nominating a judge who will overturn roe v wade. second, he’s nominated someone who ruled against the Family Medical Leave Act. i mean come on! FMLA was one of the most progressive peices of legislation passed under clinton. i guess alito is objectively anti-family. third, not only is he anti-family, he’s anti-equal rights, anti-women, anti-minority, hell he’s just anti-everything. markos has a succinct rundown of alito’s stances here.

then there’s cheney’s new chief of staff, david addington, or as i like to call him, “some guy you’ve probably never heard of”. addington’s replacement is john hannah, or as i like to call him “the other guy you’ve probably never heard of”. well, if you read the libby indictments on friday, then you have indeed heard of these guys. they are both knee-deep in the cia leak scandal, and both were named in the indictment. i guess people fail upwards in the vice president’s office as well.

then there’s the district sixer blog, which has posted the rest of the interview with david harris, presumed opponent to smokey joe barton in next november’s congressional election. locals will take a lot of interest in that. speaking of elections, the startle-gram has finally posted up all the early voting sites.

and i’ve also gotten some interesting emails from several sources who are skeptical of doreen geiger’s bid to become tarrant county democratic party chair. without going into too much detail, let’s just say that doreen’s democratic bonafides have come into question. while current chair art brender has a decades-long history of democratic party politics, doreen has apparently only voted in two elections. one of them was the republican primary in 2000. her tarrant county voter registration is current, but again, she has a history of only voting in two elections. and color me skeptical, but i can’t see making someone who only recently began exercising their civic duty the new head of the party. as far as volunteer work goes, her website says she’s only been active since may of this year. sorry, but at this point i just don’t think she’s demonstrated a committment to the party. as a precinct chair i’ll get a vote in this, and at this point i don’t see doreen geiger getting my vote. of course, my mind may change with new information, but at this point i’m leaning towards re-electing art.

now i say that with some hesitation. i have been lucky enough to dine with mr. brender back in the heady days of dean, and he is a nice man with his heart in the right place. he made a good impression on me and he obviously knows his way around tarrant county. but i still wonder if art doesn’t get the new grassroots. he doesn’t seem to get the netroots at all, and that bothers me. he’ll listen (believe me i waxed on and on about what can be done on the internet) but i don’t think it sinks in. for three years the TCDP has had discussions about revamping it’s website, updating it’s mailing lists, etc etc. but look at this peice of crap website. it is FUBAR and damned-near useless. my cries about updating the website have fallen on deaf ears and i’m *thisclose* to just registering a domain name of my own and doing it myself. seriously, that should have been done ages ago.

but i’m going to take off my bitchin’ hat for now and leave you with this: Scalito.com. yea yea, i already sent then a note about creating an actual index.html file. but just be aware of that site and keep your eyes on it over the next 24 hours.

Speculation Station/Merry Fitzmas Yall

October 28, 2005

Well, it seems today is the day the indictment train finally pulls into Speculation Station. Its scheduled to arrive around 2 pm eastern. We shall see who is a passenger. Of course there is also speculation that the train will continue on its journey.

Some are calling today Fitzmas. Personally, I always feel let down by holidays. And I rarely get good presents, so I am not all that optimistic about today. But you never know.

Me and Anna left cookies out for Santa Fitz, but I think the cats ate them. Anyhow, today is supposedly the day much of this speculation comes to an end. No more shaking the boxes to see whats inside. No more trying to peak into Fitzgerald’s closet looking for unwrapped gifts.

I do see some presents under the Fitzmas tree, and I hope there is something there besides underwear. I always get underwear. Just once can we get some real indictments?

And for the love of God, can we please finally end the damned speculation game? I am so fucking tired of hearing the talking heads, the blogosphere and everyone else trying to guess what will happen.

So boys and girls, listen closely around 2 pm for the sound of the train whistle. And when you do, run down to the platform and see who gets off, who stays on and whether the train stays or continues on.

Because today is Fitzmas. A time for miracles, for singing and dancing, and if we have all been good boys and girls, maybe, just maybe, we will get those indictments we have been asking for all year.

Maybe.

update from anna: merry fitzmas, yall. msnbc and cnn are reporting that lewis libby, cheney’s rove, has been indicted on five counts: “one count of obstruction of justice, two counts of making false statements and two counts of perjury in the CIA leak probe”. he is expected to resign.

to those who say celebrations are not in order, are you insane?! if you believe in justice, if you believe in the rule of law, then this is indeed a sweet moment.

libby was cheney’s rove. cheney was the one who pushed the neocon foreign policy cabal onto the bush administration’s agenda. sure, bush wanted to take out the guy who “tried to kill his daddy”, but it was cheney and the WHIG who cherry-picked the intelligence and formulated the timetable. it was cheney and rummy who railroaded powell and DoS. it was the neocons who sold us this bill of goods, and anything that could possibly lead to them finally paying for their lies should be considered a positive development. and if we get rove in the end, hell, that’s just icing on the cake.

more from anna: from the AP:

Any trial would shine a spotlight on the secret deliberations of Bush and his team as they built the case for war against Iraq.

Bush ordered U.S. troops to war in March 2003, saying Saddam Hussein’s weapons of mass destruction program posed a grave and immediate threat to the United States. No such weapons were found. The U.S. military death toll climbed past 2,000 this week.

the smoking gun has the indictment scans here.

a sad milestone

What Bowers says:

News outlets are now reporting that the number of American military fatalities in Iraq has reached 2,000. However, to focus only on the American and military fatalities as a result of the American-led invasion of Iraq would be a mistake. Here are some other numbers:

* Iraq Body Count currently records the number of Iraqi civilian fatalities as at least 26,690, and as many as 30,051.
* As of this writing, at least 3,450 Iraqi security forces have been killed since the start of the insurgency.
* In addition to Iraqi and American fatalities, coalition forces in Iraq have suffered at least 199 fatalities, including 97 from Britain.
* Further, as of this writing, at least 272 contractors have been killed in Iraq.
* Finally, lest we forget, at least 58 journalists have also been killed in Iraq.

The number is not 2,000. It is way beyond 2,000. Even without the Iraqi civilian fatalities, the occupation has cost the lives of at least 5,979 people (again, most of whom are Iraqis). It has also caused tens of thousands of people to become wounded.

So yeah, by the lowest count possible, the number of deaths in Iraq reached 2,000 today. That, however, should not be the only number we are counting.

All the names must be collected. All of the dead must be remembered.

My freewayblogs for tomorrow morning will read:

prop 2 early voting is on

October 24, 2005

wow, opposition from both sides. pass the popcorn!

moveon.org says:

There are many reasons to oppose Proposition 2 on Nov. 8, but MoveOn member Lynnie Henderson of Dallas, said it best: “This proposition is solely a hate measure: same sex marriage is already illegal in Texas. Plus, the proposal would amend the Bill of Rights in a way that DENIES rights. The implications of this amendment also go far beyond same sex marriage (the language of the bill makes it apply to common law marriage, contracts, etc.). Please vote NO on Prop. 2.”

An overwhelming 93% of you agreed in our statewide survey last week, so as part of “MoveOn Members Endorse 2005″ we’re proud to oppose Prop. 2, which would not only ban domestic partner benefits and civil unions, but is written so carelessly it could lead to legal objections to ALL marriages in Texas.

and from the right, check out the “danger will robinson” style fonts at savetexasmarriage.com.

i’m voting against prop 2. if you’re in tarrant county, early voting information is here. plug in your last name, pull up your record, and scroll to the bottom for your polling place.

Why do we keep breeding?

October 21, 2005

This isn’t one of my standard rants… I haven’t researched anything. I don’t plan on researching anything and as usual, I could care less what anyone else thinks.

That being said, why do we insist on having offspring? Is there some kind of strange hormonal instinct that tells human beings that they must have children? Is there something in the water that forces us to reproduce?

It’s not that I think children are evil. It’s not that I don’t like kids. It is actually a little deeper than that. Something inside me tells me that in a world where corruption and greed are the leading motivators for our success, that children don’t have a place in that world. What is the benefit a bringing a child into the world? Is the act of following the growth of your child through out his/her life so fulfilling that people are inspired by the challenge?

Here we are, year of our Lord Two Thousand and Five. The Bush administration has brought nothing more than utter chaos to the continent of Africa. We are using our natural resources at a rate that mother nature cannot sustain. Our test scores have plummeted and the number of kids that are graduated every year without the ability to read is rising. The environment is being raped by capitalist scum. Violence is holding steady across the board – affecting nearly every social demographic. Why would anyone in their right mind want to bring a child into this universe?

Personally, I like kids. Kids are incredible to be around. Their little minds are like sponges soaking up whatever information you are patient enough to give them. Their curiousity is absolutely astonishing to watch unfold. But, in a society where we can’t even agree on a governing body that is capable of positive change, I still don’t see an advantage to having offspring.

To be fair to a child, you need to be stable as a human being. You need to have morals that are in-line with what is required to be a respectable human. You need patience by the truckloads. You need finances that will allow you to support a growing human and all of the needs associated with that. Food, housing, clothing, entertainment are financial and physical needs for a growing child. In addition, for a couple considering kids, you have to remember that someone is going to either have to stay home with the child, or there is the concern of finding responsible child care for that child. This in an of itself is becoming more and more difficult with every passing day as the number of indictments of child care professionals is also rising.

With all of these factors to consider and probably a million more, WHY ARE WE STILL BREEDING? Isn’t the world over-populated enough?

friday frogmarch

October 21, 2005

majikthise was on the scene this morning for the delay perpwalk. check out her front page right now – she’s got some good shots.

also, this morning delay’s lawyer lied about and smeared the good folks at moveon.org. dick deguerin said that delay should get a new venue because the sitting judge sent a contribution to moveon in 2004. deguerin went on to say (streaming quicktime link) that moveon is currently selling t-shirts with delay’s mugshot on them. the lovely M$M has already picked up on the smear and is repeating it like good little parrots. and of course, it’s not true:

DEGUERIN: The latest thing on MoveOn.org’s website, they are trying to raise money by selling t-shirts with Tom DeLay’s mug shot on the t-shirts. And I just don’t think that it looks right for the judge sitting on Congressman DeLay’s case to have contributed to an organization such as that.

According to MoveOn’s Washington director Tom Mattzie, this claim is false. Mattzie told ThinkProgress this morning that MoveOn has “never sold any t-shirts with Tom DeLay’s mug shot” on their website or otherwise. You can go to their website and see that he’s right.

can’t you just smell the desperation?

oh happy day – delay’s mugshot

October 20, 2005

he’s smiling real pretty considering he’ll soon be a convicted felon:

and here is the arrest warrant. and of course, the farkers are already having fun with this.

oh happy day!
